 Gary managed to hole a 58-foot chip from the rough for one of his four birdies and also amazingly got up-and-down to save par five times  on his way to winning the Reno-Tahoe Open on Sunday for his second PGA TOUR victory. He finished with a total of 44 points in the Modified Stableford event. Gary said that he had tried to stay calm;

“It felt like it was meant to be this week, I tried to stay calm and really focus on what I was doing. Even though I wasn’t hitting greens I was hitting it in the right spots and gave myself opportunities to get up and down. I got lucky to find my ball on 14 there in the hazard and I kind of chopped it out. The chip that went in, I was just trying to get it on the green, let alone go in. It was one of the best shots I’ve ever hit. To follow up after Brendan Steele made the putt on 15, to answer him was huge, he had a lot of momentum and I sort of stole it all back and sort of rode it the rest of the way.”

Jonathan Byrd and Andres Romero tied for second place with 35 points, and Brendan Steele captured fourth spot on 33 points.

Jonathan birdied five of his first seven holes, and then followed that up with an Eagle on the par-5, 13th hole;

” My whole mindset was just to be a little more aggressive and give ourselves chances and just free it up. And I was able to do that today getting off to a hot start, just felt like I was off to the races.”

Played a Stableford event myself yesterday, came second on 40 points.

AT&T National. 4 Tied at the Top at Crowded Congressional.

There are four players tied at the top of the leaderboard at a crowed Congressional AT&A National, all at -7 under par for the tournament, the score exactly where it was at the beginning of the round.

James Driscoll and Bill Hass were the guys who moved up the leaderboard on moving day with third rounds of -3 under par 68′s to join the guys at the top. Andres Romero carded a -1 under par third round while Roberto Castro stood still with an even par effort.

Bill remarked;

” The back nine, I didn’t really know where I was going. Luckily after that triple, I was able to hit three decent iron shots and then make the putt. Certainly, it could have been a 6-, 7-, 8-under day. But it also could have been a 4-, 5-, 6-over day if I hadn’t putted well. I don’t really know what to make of how I’m playing. Just got to hopefully do more good than bad tomorrow.”

James reflected that he had not played well, even though he leads the field in strokes gained-putting, picking up more than 3 shots on the field average per round at the AT&T National on the  Congressional Country Club course.

” It’s not perfect golf, but you don’t really have to play perfect golf sometimes. If you’re just patient and putt well and have a good short game, it can go a long way, and that’s kind of what I’m doing this week This is as good a chance as I’ve had for sure, but there’s still 18 holes to go.”

Roberto described it as a wild day, he had to take a penalty drop out of a bunker;

“Wild day, saving a bogey would have been huge, making a par is just a bonus. Nothing good was going to happen if I swung at it, and I thought if I dropped, pitched out, I could make bogey or double, which is not the end of the world. I didn’t need to sit there and make 8 or something. Over four days here, every player is going to hit kind of a rough patch. I don’t see it being easy out here, so mine just came early today, and I just tried to survive it.”

Jason Kokrak is alone in fifth place at -6 under par for the tournament, while Jordan Spieth, who was tied with Roberto at the top of the leaderboard at the start of the day, isn’t out of it. Despite shooting a +3 over par 74, he is still amazingly just three off the lead.

Jordan still thinks he could be in the mix tomorrow;

” Making a double on the easiest hole on the course, and then following up with bogey on a par 5 with a lob wedge in my hand, it was very difficult at the turn for me to stay calm and hit good shots to start the back nine. Maybe lost a couple of shots with my emotions there, which is upsetting. But like I said, I shot 5 under yesterday. I could shoot 5 under tomorrow and be in great position.”

AT&T National. Play Suspended in 2nd Round. Two Tied at the Top

There were two players tied at the top of the leaderboard in the AT&T National at Congressional Golf Club when play was suspended for the day, halting the second round.

See you on Saturday

Jordan Spieth was tied with Roberto Castro at -7 under par for the tournament, both payers having completed their second rounds before the horn sounded and halted play for the day. The reason for the delay was bands of storms continuing to move through the area, play will resume for the conclusion of the second round at 7 am Saturday.

Jordan had a magical second round score of -5 under par 66, which propelled him to the summit of the leaderboard, he said that he had learned a lot from his effort at The Players;

” I probably learned a lot at THE PLAYERS and realized that one round doesn’t mean anything. Just got to keep going. I was able to do that today. It feels good to play two rounds under par, it’s a very hard golf course.”

Roberto had a more modest second round of -2 under par 69, on the par 71 Congressional lay-out.

Andres Romero still has five holes to play and is tied with Dong-Hwan Lee, who has completed his second round, both currently at -5 under par.

R&A upset over Carlos Tevez as Caddy, not too bothered about long putters.

Carlos Tevez, the renegade Manchester City striker made an unscheduled appearance on Sunday at Royal Lytham as caddy to fellow Argentinian Andres Romero. The move did not help Andres too much, he finished with a last round of  82, which left him at the bottom of the leaderboard of those players who made the cut and contested the final rounds. Looking at the picture he does not appear to be too upset at falling apart on the golf course.

 Royal and Ancient committee chairman Jim McArthur was incensed;

” He never put the bag down, even when he was standing on the green, it’s just absolute madness. I think we need to look at this particular case. We normally get a list of caddies at the start of the week.”

This apparently is what is most important to him, not the long putter debate. Luckily for the genuine golf fan the R&A chief executive Peter Dawson managed to put a positive spin onto the strange but golfwise harmless occurrence;

“It was pretty interesting. I thought, because of the big crowd following the group, that golf fans and football fans may overlap a little more than I had realised. It’s not a bad thing, perhaps.”

Lets all hope that Peter Dawson’s clear thinking will prevail when they finally get around to debating the anchoring issue. As I reported yesterday even Ernie Els knows anchoring is cheating, he said before he swapped to the belly putter;

“It’s become such an easy way to putt. Nerves and skill in putting is part of the game. Take a tablet if you can’t handle it.”

And then after he had switched;

“As long as it’s legal, I’ll keep cheating like the rest of them.”

The question is, do YOU believe anchoring is cheating, or is it now just part of the game ? What do you think?
