Lesley Carter. Toddlers Bucket List

Just recently I have been sharing some information with Lesley Carter, the travel bucket list girl, about the pro’s and con’s between Disneyland and Disney World. Lesley writes a great column so I suggest you pop over and read it, click here, its full of derring-do, crazy stunts that I would not attempt. Leaving a perfectly serviceable airplane in mid-flight, by the side door would never appeal to me.

But we do share a fondness for Disney, I prefer World to Land. Actually, as I was telling Lesley, when we first flew over from England with our two young (then) daughters, it was a truly magical experience.

Disney World

 Disney

We stayed in a motel right across the street from the Disneyland car park. A quick walk through to the main gates and you were in.

There is so much to see and do, which is why we kept going back. For me it was a life changing first trip. In those days, sixties and seventies in London was a magical mystery trip all of its own. We were happy and carefree, I did not have a steady job, did not need one. But my wife Wendy, insisted that I got a proper job, and applied for one for me with an airline, TWA.

Somehow they hired me, I agreed with her indoors to stay at the airline long-enough to qualify for cheap rate tickets, and we would take the kids to Disneyland. Back then just the flight on a Boeing 747 jumbo jet was magical. It is still the best aircraft in the sky.

Once we had all tasted Disney, and the wonderful people of America, that was it, the kids insisted we have got to do that again. Next trip was to Disney World, that trip was even better, I could see myself working for the Airline forever, actually I stayed for about 23 years. TWA were replaced by American Airlines and things just got better and better.

Arrival at Disney World is so much more grand, a drive down a  huge multi-lane highway, at least three miles long, that is just up to the main gate. A train ride from the car park to the turnstiles and then chose whether to ride the mono-rail, or sail over in a boat to the Magic Kingdom. It always ended, after a very long day, with the Electric Light Parade, and fireworks display. The kids thought it was a miracle, my back-yard efforts with fireworks on 5th November were resigned to the bin.

We went backwards and forwards until the kids were pretty much grown-up. Then before we knew it the grand-children arrived, as each one got to around 4 or 5 we took them to Disney. We had to rent two houses, side by side just to accommodate everyone. The headcount of the last trip was, two grownup daughters and husbands, two teenage grand-kids, four younger ones, for a total of twelve.

Where is all this going, I here you say, I will tell you mate, we now have a great-grandson, who is five and ready for Disney. They all expect good-old granddad to take everyone to Disney, just like the old days. Apparently I am rich enough to pay for the now three houses we will need, but how can you resist a little one like this;

Luke Donald and BMW PGA Championship

Luke Donald is excited about playing in the BMW PGA Championship and cannot wait to defend his title at Wentworth Club next month. Luke rates this as the biggest tournament outside the Major Championships, and this is where he beat Lee Westwood in a play-off last year to not only claim the coveted trophy but rob his compatriot of the World Number One spot, a position Luke held on to for a total of 40 weeks. Luke spoke about his ambitions for this year;

“The BMW PGA Championship is the best event we play outside the Majors on The European Tour. Obviously the Majors come first. Those are the events I’m looking to try to win at the top of the list, but Wentworth isn’t far behind. For me it has a special, personal feeling too, because I grew up so close to it. I came as a kid a few times to watch and I have some special memories having won there as well. There’s a sentimental factor. I had a few wins last year, but I think Wentworth was the most fun and the most enjoyable because I got that World Number One ranking. It just all seemed to happen for a reason that week, at the flagship event of The European Tour, going against Lee who was World Number One and doing it in front of lots of friends and family. Especially having grown up just down the road, it was very special.  It’s a bigger event with the world class field that it attracts, and you always get up for those big events. I’m extremely excited to go back there and defend.”

“Who better to take down than the Number One player?” he said. “And the fact he happened to be British and English, that made that one much more satisfying.  If I’d been going against a lesser name, the win still would have been special, but in terms of going head to head with Lee, it was a special one. Right now we have so many guys who are ranked highly. We are always trying to get one over the other. We do have good relationships off the course, so on the course, certainly we are trying to beat each other.”

Last year's BMW PGA Championship was a truly special week for Luke Donald (EuropeanTour)

Since then the World Number One title has seesawed between Luke and  Rory McIlroy, but the 34 year old knows that if he can produce a similar performance over Wentworth Club’s demanding West Course to last years super effort, he will return to the pinnacle of the Official World Golf Rankings. It would be a real boost for Luke to win at Wentworth, and return to the number one spot and I will be cheering him on, albeit from my TV armchair down here in New Zealand. Incidently, I too lived just up the road from Wentworth, used to drive past it everyday, but have never played there. Perhaps one day I will make it, its on my bucket list !!!
