Another Distraction For Rory, Getting Married !!

At the New Year’s Eve fireworks display at Sydney Harbour, Rory McIlroy proposed marriage to his tennis girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki . Could this be another distraction for Rory as he tries to regain his number one in the world ranking ?

Rory used the firework display as the backdrop and a precursor for his own big bang announcement of his midnight proposal, employing Twitter to say;

“Happy New Year everyone! I have a feeling it’s going to be a great year!! My first victory of 2014 #shesaidyes!!”

Caroline wasted no time to tweet back;

“Happy New Year everyone! Rory and I started 2014 with a bang! … I said YES!!!”

The two former World Number Ones were at the New Year’s Eve firework display in Sydney as Caroline prepares for the Australian Open starting on January 13.

These two are not the first famous Golf-Tennis double act to get married, with Greg Norman – like Rory a two-time major champion – wedding fellow former world No1 Chris Evert in 2008, although the marriage lasted only 15 months. Not surprising as they could not even decide whose house they would call home, they both wanted to stay in their usual places. You would have thought they would have sorted that out before actually getting hitched.

I wish the couple well and a long and happy marriage, wether they can both regain their number one status in each sport is a really fascinating event, which will keep the newspapers and magazines occupied through 2014.

Jimenez breaks Leg, McIlroy breaks Engagement Rumor

Miguel Angel Jimenez has broken his right shinbone, while Skiing, and will be out of golf for up to five months of the 2013 season, recuperating  from the injury. Miguel took it all  in his stride, saying;

“I was skiing in Sierra Nevada, I lost control and fell. I felt a huge stab of pain and I knew straight away I had broken something. I broke the top of the tibia in my right leg, just where it meets the knee, and they put in two pins. It will take three, four or five months to recover and be able to return to competition. I was playing very well but, these things happen in life.”

A casual statement, but I guess it’s one you would expect from a millionaire, if you or me were out of work for five months it would be pretty disastrous. Amazing how many of these golfers get serious injuries, putting their golfing futures in danger, while doing some quaint pastime hobby.

Miguel was a vice captain on Europe’s Ryder Cup-winning team in September, and  In November, the 48-year-old Spaniard became the oldest European Tour winner by capturing his third Hong Kong Open title.

Rory McIlroy, the Worlds number one ranked golfer, has denied reports he is engaged to tennis player Caroline Wozniacki. Rory’s representative  released a statement on Friday saying various media reports of the couple’s engagement weren’t true.

“On behalf of Rory McIlroy, I would like to confirm that he has NOT become engaged to Caroline Wozniacki as was originally reported in Australian press. Rory is in Australia to support Caroline before he heads in January to Abu Dhabi.”

Of course if Caroline thinks that they were engaged and Rory has now slapped her down in public, I guess this is the end of that little fairy story. After that terse rebuff, what girl in her right mind would now accept the proposal of such a man. Who knows this could be the last picture of the Happy Couple.

Rory and Caroline Engagement Rumors are Rife.

Rory McIlroy and girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki have sparked engagement rumors once again after she was spotted wearing a huge diamond on her left ring finger in Australia on Friday.

Caroline Wozniacki and Rory McIlroy are rumored to have taken their relationship a step further by getting engaged. The pair flew into Brisbane, Australia, bright and early on Friday morning, Caroline flashing what appeared to be a diamond engagement ring on her left hand.

The talk of wedding bells is increasing after the couple allegedly purchased a Florida mansion together earlier this month. Some say the couple are already secretly married, alluding to the fact that she has also been seen wearing a diamond and sapphire band. Caroline has spoken of Rory’s never-say-die attitude as being an inspiration to her. But she will not be receiving any coaching tips while Rory accompanies her in Brisbane, before he flies to Dubai for the year-opening Abu Dhabi Championship.

” He leaves me alone to just let me do my thing.”

Rory is sure Caroline’s rankings slide and failure in Grand Slam events has nothing to do with her work ethic.

” Seeing how hard she works and how hard she practices and how dedicated she is, it definitely flipped a switch with me that I could be a little more like that. ‘She’s definitely been a great influence on me.”

Ex World number one Caroline, now ranked 10 is one of eight top-10 players in the main draw in the Australian Open in Brisbane, where Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova, Victoria Azarenka and Samantha Stosur share top billing. She is fully aware of the strong competition in this tournament;

”It is tough but that’s how I want to start the year, I want to start off well and this field gives the perfect preparation. Obviously I want to go far here and, to do that, I have to play against the best.”

European Tour Money Title for Rory ?

Rory McIlroy /thesidelinesagenda.com

Rory McIlroy can wrap up the European money title this week if he puts in a good performance at the Singapore Open. All his closest rivals will not be competing, and he already leads the race going into the tournament. Rory has already claimed the U.S. PGA Tour money list, and would love to repeat Luke Donald’s 2011 win on both sides of the Atlantic. Rory said he would like to have a strong finish to the season;

“I’m in the lead at the moment and it would be nice to increase that,” McIlroy said Wednesday, a day before the tournament. “There’s still a lot to play for in the next three weeks and I want to finish off the season as strong as possible.”

His nearest rivals, Justin Rose, Ian Poulter, who won last week at the WGC-HSBC Champions in China, and Branden Grace, have strangely decided not to compete this week. The field is still going to be a strong one, with the likes of Phil Mickelson, Adam Scott, Padraig Harrington, Colin Montgomery, John Daly and Miguel Angel Jimenez all teeing it up for the tournament at the Serapong Course at Sentosa Golf Club.

The winners prize cheque this week is $1 million, and Rory will also be playing next week at  the Hong Kong Open, while most of his rivals again will not be competing. Rory did not play at the WGC event last week, because he watched his girlfriend, Caroline Wozniacki, play in a tennis tournament. A poor decision which bought him world-wide criticism, and especially by the golf tournament sponsor. Rory has admitted that the criticism against him was fairly laid.

“I think the criticism is fair. Shenzhen is a World Golf Championship event, one of the big ones. It was a tough one to miss. But I can’t play every week.”

He then went on to say;

”  If I had I would have played five in a row finishing the season and after playing Turkey and Ryder Cup and all the FedEx Cup stuff, it’s just too much. You have to say no and you have to be selfish sometimes and look after yourself, ; it doesn’t make you a bad person. You have got to put yourself first and foremost, and try to fit in the things you want to do. I’m in the fortunate position where I can dictate where I want to play, what I want to do, where I want to go.”

Seems that is what all the youngsters say these days; I do want I want, when I want to do it.

Turkish Airlines World Golf Final, Tiger and Rory lose

Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy lost their first round matches in the Turkish Airlines World Golf Final, in Turkey at the Antalya  Golf Club. Tiger bogeyed the last hole to lose by one shot to  former Masters champion Charl Schwartzel.

Rory said of his day;

” I hit my drive into the trees on 15 and lost a bit of confidence. I now need to win both my matches tomorrow to advance. I just struggled for a bit of motivation out there today.”

The number one ranked Rory McIlroy lost to Matt Kuchar, racking up some big numbers in the process including a triple-bogey and two double-bogeys.  Because it is medal match play, those high scores are much more costly than if it were straight match play, and it is now extremely unlikely that either Tiger or Rory will progress in this tournament. Only the top two players from each group go through to the semi finals.

A telling point about Rory’s state of mind, he had in tow his tennis-playing girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki.

Matt Kutchar played in shorts, and said he had a quiet match;

“I just thought I had to play mistake-free and hopefully Rory wouldn’t get too hot. Then we were all square with four to go, he hits it right and makes a triple bogey and I go three up with three to go and I think both of us lost a little interest at that point.”

Tiger commented about his play;

It came right down to the wire but I can’t believe how far that second shot flew into the back bunker. It means I now have to play ‘Kooch’ and try and win that match before facing Rory in the afternoon. Despite the outcome I really enjoy the format. It’s not something we play very often. I had a three-shot swing go against me on nine and a two-shot swing in my favor at 17 when I birdied the hole and Charl bogeyed.”

On the other side of the contest, Justin Rose won 71-75 over Hunter  Mahan, who failed to make a birdie. Then Lee Westwood defeated Webb Simpson by a stroke. Lee wore a huge smile on his face when he chipped in from off the green at the 17th to take charge of his match with Simpson, he said afterwards;

“I played a great shot there even though I did not have too good a lie. The ball was sitting down where TV cables had been but it just came out perfect. It landed in the right spot and as soon as it got on the green it looked like going in.”

The two semifinals will be determined for Thursday’s play with the finals taking place on Friday, the winner earning $1.5 million.

What I want to know is, why are these multi-millionaires competing  for a measly $1.5 winners purse, in a war-torn area. Syria has just recently attacked Turkey with missiles, are these guys really that desperate for another mill ?
