Sleepless in Seattle

This is a non golf offering, I watched Sleepless in Seattle, again last night. Had not seen it for many years, but still marveled at the great story-line and the magnificent soundtrack. The music turns a good movie into a brilliant one, I just loved the soundtrack. I doubt if you could muster another group of singers and songs that would provide the same atmosphere and touch of class to amplify the scenes in this story. Tom Hanks has gone on to make other great movies, Meg Ryan looks absolutely gorgeous, why she wanted to surgically change that lovely look is way beyond me. Here is the play list:

  1. As Time Goes By - Jimmy Durante (2:28)
  2. A Kiss to Build a Dream on - Louis Armstrong (3:01)
  3. Stardust - Nat King Cole (3:15)
  4. Makin’ Whoopee - Dr. John feat. Rickie Lee Jones (4:09)
  5. In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning - Carly Simon (3:16)
  6. Back in the Saddle Again - Gene Autry (2:36)
  7. Bye Bye Blackbird - Joe Cocker (3:30)
  8. A Wink and a Smile - Harry Connick, Jr. (4:08)
  9. Stand By Your Man - Tammy Wynette (2:41)
  10. An Affair to Remember - Marc Shaiman (2:31)
  11. Make Someone Happy - Jimmy Durante (1:52)
  12. When I Fall in Love - Celine Dion & Clive Griffin (4:21

Sleepless in Seattle Poster

I have been to Seattle, once in my life, it was raining when we landed and it was still teeming when we left the next morning. My wife and I had been visiting friends in Canada, Saltspring Isalnd, which is just across the water from Seattle. Flew on a single engined elastic band machine in a terrible storm, thunder and lightning all around, the small machine was pitching up and down. Plunging seemingly out of control one minute and the the old engine screaming to get us back up again the next. It would be safe to say that it was some experience, the like of which I hope we never have to repeat.

Funny anecdote about that trip; that evening Wendy and I dined out at a restaurant that had been recommended to us by the concierge at the hotel we were staying at. We were promised a wonderful view of Seattle if we dined at the Space Needle, a fine dining experience, something not to be missed during our short stay. Arriving at the restaurant floor in a high speed elevator, 500 feet above ground level of the skyscraper building, our waiter seated us at a table next to a window, so we could admire the brightly lit city beneath us.

Our cocktails arrived, and we sipped them slowly while selecting something from the menu. After ordering Wendy decided she needed to visit the ladies room, as women usually do frequently on any night out, to powder her nose she said. She asked directions to powder room and clippety clopped off in her high heels. Half an hour later she had still not returned, so I ordered another cocktail, the waiter asked where my wife was because our meals were ready to be served. I explained where she had gone, so he went to investigate. Some minutes later Wendy suddenly appeared, looking sheepish. She said she could not see where I was when she came out of the ladies room and just wandered around looking for me, until she bumped into our waiter, who escorted her back to our table. Unfortunately Wendy was unaware that we were in a revolving restaurant, so when she came out of the powder room in the static part of the building, our table and me with it were gone. We enjoyed the rest of the evening and left Seattle first thing the next morning for New York, en route to London and back to work. This story is not in the same class as Sleepless in Seattle, but is still one we mull over from time to time and laugh about. Saltspring Isalnd ? we have never been back, or even seen our friends since then, but emails keep us in touch, that’s another Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan movie, You’ve got Mail.
