Things started to come together for the International Team when Louis Oosthuizen sunk a cross-country 72 ft putt to win the 8th hole. He and Branden Grace then went on to win the crucial first four-ball match of the day 4 & 3 over Jordan Spieth and Dustin Johnson.

Louis said is was an important moment in the match;

“It was a massive moment-changer.”

“We never let the foot off the accelerator.”

“If you play against guys like Dustin and Jordan, you need to think they are going to make everything all the time, and that was our mind-set.”

Branden said Nick Price had left them in no doubt as to what he wanted from them;

“It was pretty clear for us what (Price) wanted from us.”

“Get a blue number up there, we needed to start strong and get a point and get the team to see that.”

For all the great golf that was played today, one moment of madness stands out, Phil Mickelson was penalized for changing his ball for his second shot into the 7th green. He needed one that would carry further, but it is against the rules of this competition to change balls, but only in the four-balls !!!

Phil’s breach of the “one-ball” rule came along with a “match adjustment” loss of hole, which meant the United States had automatically lost a hole because of the mistake, and Adam Scott / Jason Day carded 4 to Zach Johnson’s 5 which would add on another loss at the seventh.

Phil redeemed himself holing out for a two, from a bunker, 138 yards from the green

Phil admitted he had got it wrong saying;

“I made a mistake.”
