Johnson completed his second round but only had time for 15 third round holes before the persistent rain finally caused the suspension of play for the day. Johnson currently stands at the top of the Safeway Open leaderboard with a total of -15 under par, being -3 under so far in the third round.
Johnson had a chip in at the eighth hole;
“It was huge, I was kind of going along steady, going along making pars, a couple nice up-and-downs yesterday but the day before I spun it off 62 yards off the front of the green and luckily today coming out of the rough it didn’t have any spin and it was really a pretty good shot there short and right of the hole.”
“I needed to make a birdie and I’m not usually known for my chipping skills so it was nice to chip one in.”
“It was so brutal out there the last few holes.”
“I was hanging on little quack hooks to the green but just somehow getting it up and down and making par putter and really just trying to survive.”
Patton Kizzire, -5 under through 16 third round holes and Scott Piercy +1 over today after 15 holes, share second place at -14 under par.
Patton mentioned the tough conditions;
“After holding an umbrella for a while your hand gets a little tired and then you’ve got to step up there and hit a three-footer.”
Paul Casey is fourth, -1 under today though 15 holes, for a -13 under par total.
