Rickie fired a bogey free -8 under par 64 in the opening round of the Shell Houston Open at the Golf Club of Houston.
Rickie was happy with the breaks he got in the wet muddy conditions;
“I felt like I got some good breaks with having mud on the same side as where the trouble was and that I could kind of keep it fairly conservative.”
“If the mud was kind of kicking in, it ended up being a good shot.”
“It’s probably more nervous when you get out there on the mound than we really ever get or maybe close to Ryder Cup nerves.”
“You’re just hoping not to screw up.”
Sung Kang, from South Korea, is in second place, just one shot back at -6 under par following his first round -7 under par 65, which included a bogey;
“I don’t know anything about the future, and whatever happens, happens.”
“I’ll just keep doing what I can do the next few days, and I’ll accept the results.”
Sharing third place are Jhonattan Vegas, Stewart Cink and Kyle Stanley, all at -6 under after their opening rounds of 66.
Seven players are tied in fourth position with scores of -5 under par; Justin Rose, Hudson Swafford, Troy Merritt, Russell Henley and Tom Hodge. Hopefully tomorrow the course will have dried out from the recent heavy rains.
